Railway Heritage, George Stephenson & Early Locomotive Designs Stamp. 1995 1000R

By 1830 almost one hundred locomotives had been built in Britain. Those early experimental locomotives mainly used either inclined or vertical cyclinders. But in 1830 George Stephenson introduced his 2-2-0 Planet type. This was a radical step forward from the earlier Rocket and its  derivatives, and it formed the basis on which all future locomotives were to be designed. George Stephenson (1781-1848), was the world's best known locomotive engineer. His son, inherited his father's outstanding abilities, and also became a renowed railway engineer of similar fame and invention.

The superb stamp is set into the 7.3 x 6cm picture (see photo) and is protected by a double, clear plastic cover which is attached to the headed 'Railway Heritage' 24 x 30cm card. On the bottom is a small write-up about this great man & the early Locomotives.
